I often get asked this question: What’s your secret to work-life harmony?
My answer? Well, it’s no secret. I found my way to harmony by being intentional with my time and energy. One way to do this is by defining your rituals.
I know the word ritual sounds intense, but it just refers to non-negotiable habits that you create for yourself to preserve your mental and physical well-being. Life can often get hectic and leaving important things like spending quality time with loved ones and connecting with your inner self up to chance can be a recipe for disaster.
Instead, defining rituals that align with your values can help you identify what matters to you and gives you a chance to prioritize them. As an entrepreneur who’s no stranger to burnout, creating rituals have allowed me to direct more of my time and energy to the things that bring me happiness.
For example, my friends and I have made it a point to meet once a month for a rotating supper club. Not only does this ritual give us all a chance to take a break from our busy lives to spend time together and catch up, it also allows us to speak on various issues, exchange different perspectives, and learn from one another. Knowing that I have quality time set aside with my friends every month gives me a great sense of comfort and is one of the many rituals that contribute to my work-life harmony.
Defining rituals that fill your cup is an absolute must when it comes to finding harmony. Start by asking yourself: What matters to you? What do you value most in life? Create rituals centered around those things and dedicate some time to them. If the thought of committing to something big scares you, start small. Enjoy reading? Start by reading for 5 minutes a day. Love cooking? Try a simple 10-minute recipe once a week.
Go big or go home does not apply here. Your rituals are your own. Create ones that work for you and tweak it as you go. That’s my not-so-secret secret to harmony.
